Matthew Le Tissier

Matthew Le Tissier

0

Matthew Le Tissier was born in St Peter Port, Guernsey on 14th October, 1968.

He played youth football on the island and was clearly a class above his team. He signed pro at Southampton in May 1985 after spending a successful trial at Oxford Utd. He played his first professional game on 2nd September 1986.

Matt was a dedicated player to one club throughout his career, spending 16 years at The Dell with his beloved Saints from 1986 to retirement in 2002, playing in 431 league games, 50 league cup games and 32 FA Cup games.

During his career he scored 208 goals for his club including 49 out of 50 penalties.

Matt will always be remembered as a scorer of brilliant goals and was a firm favourite with the Southampton fans.

His goals were often unexpected and for this ability he was nicknamed "Le God" among the supporters.

When you consider Matt's immense ability and scoring record it is difficult to understand why he was only capped 8 times for England between 1994 to 1998.

On the 19th May, 2001 Le Tissier scored his last competitive goal against Arsenal at The Dell, which had been Southampton's home for more than 100 years.
